Transportation Needs
There are several forms of transportation available to you:
Taxis
Shuttle Vans
Rental Cars
Limousines
Busses
Monorail
Taxis
Taxi drivers have been encouraged by management to take the "long haul". It happens 23% of the time on nearly all trips to and from the strip. Some drivers belong to a passenger coalition to protect you, but it is hit or miss to get one of these. Here is a hint, tell your driver you are thrilled to be back in Las Vegas for the 2nd or third time this year. This indicates you are a frequent visitor and they may not try to take you for a longer ride. Here is a known example: if going to the New York, New York, there is absolutely no reason to take the highway. You should state "New York, New York please via the Strip." Some of the hotels have parking in the back such as MGM Grand and Bally's. If you do not know where you are being taken, the price should be no more than $20 to just about any hotel on the Strip. try not to argue but be aware.
To catch a taxi from the airport, simply follow the signs inside baggage claim for taxis. You will be herded like cattle but the line moves quickly. Just follow the crowd and you will be fine.
Shuttles
Shuttles are a convenient, low cost way to get to your hotel, but be aware that you will have several stops. If you are not in a big hurry, enjoy the ride. You get to see much while going from place to place but it is going to take longer than a taxi.
Rental Vehicles
Rental vehicles can be attained at the airport and select locations around the city. You can expect fairly normal rates, but understand that the strip is really difficult to drive in whether during the day or night. The highway just west of the strip is nice and you can get around to Fremont street quite easily. For most people, you won't need a vehicle in Vegas but this is certainly an option available to you, but please don't drink and drive.
Limousines
Limos are certainly an incredible way to get around Vegas. But they are not inexpensive to most visitors. Still if you do your homework you can find one for less than $100 for an hour. A favorite thing to do is have the driver take you to the Welcome to Las Vegas sign to have your picture taken, then why not a drive down the strip. You are paying for a full hour, why not enjoy it. If you do not make a reservation in advance (preferred), you can go to the left side at baggage claim and follow the signs for limousine rentals. Be warned, the staff may have to search for a bit to find you a vehicle. This is not the most comfortable thing to do, so if you can, you should make reservations. If you want someone standing with a sign as you come down into baggage claim you will pay extra. Tip: This is not necessary. Most limo drivers expect a tip. There are several arguments for how much. We pay $40 extra to avoid the question. It seems the most favored rate. When you make your reservation, they will tell you where to go to find your driver. Tip: If you are handicapped and/or have heavy luggage pay for the signage because it usally includes helping you with your bags. Tip: If you want the limo but don't want the heavy expense, simply look for the rent for an hour folks. You can get buy for under $100 and for a once in a lifetime experience, go for it!
Busses
Busses are plentiful throughout the city and are inexpensive. the drawback is that they can become quite full quickly. You have two choices, the Deuce which stops at every hotel, and the SDX Express that services the strip to downtown with minimal stops. On our last trip, we took the SDC Express. The busses were clean and affordable at only $8 per day. We paid and started in front of Paris. The ride took us north to downtown where we got off at the Golden Nugget on Fremont Street. The way back was just as easy, picking the bus up from an easy location. We stopped at the Fashion Show Mall before heading back to Paris. We are now sold that this is a great way to travel and you don't have to walk for miles to get to the Monorail. Note: The SDX also has a stop at both North and South malls. Visit for maps and for information on how to ride.
Monorail
The Monorail is a wonderful way to move up and down the strip, but be warned, the stops are located at the back of most hotels so you are going to walk a long way to board the train. The last stop south is the MGM Grand, the farthest it goes it to the Sahara (now closed). The price is reasonable and you can choose between one trip, all day, or all week. If you are not going to ride it over and over, it might be cheaper just to pay for the one way trip. Just for fun, everyone should take a trip at least once. You can buy tickets in advance or at the entrance to each stop. See www.lvmonorail.com for more details.
